So I've been going through my photos and realized that I have several collections that I never got up on my blog. Last September Rebecca and I took a day trip on the train up to Ely. We had a lovely day walking around the city and visiting the Cathedral there. The abbey site was founded by the Saxon princess St. Etheldreda in AD673 as a double monastery for both nuns and monks. The Abbey site she picked is 1 mile north of the Iron age Village of Cratendune which dates back to 400bc and which had Roman and Saxon settlements.
One thing that is very facinating about Ely Abbey/Cathedral is that it lies on a major Ley Line (the St Michael Ley) that connects through Glastonbury in the west. Also just like Glastonbury, Ely was an Isle surrounded by marshy waters. The waters around Ely were drained as part of water works projects conducted in the 17th century to drain the Fens. The Isle of Avalon in the west Ley-lined to the Isle of Ely in the East. Take a look at the pictures I took around the cathedral.
